Death Knights

death knightsThe Death Knight is the first in the brand new Hero Class. In order to create the Death Knight, you have to have a character at level 55 or higher – this is the only prerequisite for the Death Knight.

The Death Knight’s history lies entrenched in the WoW lore and has only now, with Warcraft III, come into its own as the only member of the new Hero Class.

There were previous versions of the Death Knight in WoW, where the concept was that the Death Knight – or DK as it’s known – was an undead warrior with the power to raise the undead as soldiers. Although there are some differences, it is difficult to see why the Death Knight deserves a class of its own.

The Death Knight has many advantages. It is expert at tanking – no matter which of its talent trees is being used – as well as DPS melee. Although the talent trees are able to tank when In Blood Presence, the dedicated tank talent is Blood.

The three talent trees of the Death Knight are as follows:

  • Blood: This dedicated tanking tree enhances the Death Knight’s abilities, spells, weapons and healing. Blood also has a predominant health-regeneration theme. This is apparent with the enhanced Improved Death Strike, Blood Parasite, Vampire Blood, Rune Tap and the Mastery Blood Shield. Death Knight also uses his Blood talent for travelling. This talent’s Runeforging enchants are Rune of the Nerubian Carapace/Rune of the Stoneskin Gargoyle.
  • Frost: This is the DPS tree that focuses on control and a theme of critical-strike or bonus-damage. Physical damage output is enhanced by Brittle Bones and Improved Icy Talons talents. The damage is done in either the Frost Presence or the Unholy presence where most of the damage comes from Obliterate, Melee strikes, Frost Strike and Howling Blast. This talent’s Runeforging enchants are  Rune of Razorice/Rune of the Fallen Crusader.
  • Unholy. This is the DPS/PvP tree of talents and its primary focus is on diseases and other related abilities.  Along with its other abilities, the Unholy tree causes AoE damage, spell damage shielding and mobility improvement. There is also a choice between dual wielding and 2H abilities. In the Unholy Presence, the damage is done by summoning Ghouls, Death Coils, Melee strikes and Scourge strikes. This talent’s Runeforging enchants are Rune of Cinderglacier/Rune of the Fallen Crusader.

The Death Knight is loyal to Arthas the Lich King and is found at The Ebon Hold in the Eastern Plaguelands. As you start questing at the Ebon Hold, you will be fully equipped with the needed green gear, 4, 12 slots bags and 20 silver in Acherus. As you progress through the levels you will have the required talents for level 57, as well as the full blue gear needed for the following levels.

As a melee fighter, the Death Knight uses the 6 runes in his possession to activate his special abilities. The Runic Power that he gains from using the runes will help him in battle. The one drawback, however, is that the runes need a cooling down period and can’t be used during that time. The quest of The Emblazoned Runeblade is one of the Death Knight’s first quests and will reward him with the ability of Runeforging. This ability enables the Death Knight to forge a Rune as one of his weapons.

The only real disadvantage of playing the Death Knight is that there are many players who have chosen him as a character and its becoming increasingly difficult to find groups and raids.
